Abacus should be sown from mid March to mid April, but can be sown into early May depending on conditions.
Seed rate
As Abacus is a small seeded variety the drilling rate is lower than some other varieties available. It is sold in acre packs containing sufficient seed to plant 650 seeds/m2.
Fertiliser
Nitrogen should be applied to Abacus at 50-100kg/ha depending on soil type and previous cropping. It is important not to over fertilise as this can cause lodging and delays in ripening.
Weeds, pests and diseases
Abacus, like all linseed, is not competitive against weeds until after stem extension. A range of herbicides are available so consult your agronomist. Seed is usually supplied treated with Prelude for protection of young plants from seed borne diseases. Growers are advised to buy seed treated with Chinook for the control of flea beetle during emergence.
Harvesting
Linseed can be harvested using a conventional combine harvester, but crops should be fully desiccated as the fibrous straw can cause problems, especially in wet, lodged or late maturing crops. The latter can be particularly problematic, causing loss of yield and quality. The early maturity of Abacus is therefore a distinct advantage.
