COSTELLO

Costello feed winter wheat

Consistency and outstanding grain quality in all seasons

A variety you can trust, Costello remains a popular, high yielding, hard Group 4 feed wheat combining all the features  desired on farm – exceptional grain quality in all conditions, good sprouting resistance, superb enduring resistance to yellow rust, high yields and short, stiff straw.

It performs well over a range of soil types, locations and rotations.

It has the additional important benefit of resistance to soil-borne wheat mosaic virus.

Costello still has the highest specific weight of any variety on the AHDB RL and the highest hagberg. This superb grain quality across a range of seasons and conditions, together with excellent disease resistance and superb agronomics, provide a wider range of market opportunities, reduce costs and offer the grower security both in crop management and at harvest.

Exceptional Grain Quality

Costello has retained its exceptional grain quality year on year, with once again both the highest specific weight and HFN on the AHDB RL 2024/25. It also has a high protein content and shows excellent resistance to sprouting in difficult seasons.

Superb, reliable grain quality provides growers with security at harvest and widens market opportunities for Costello, an important asset which has been key to its success.

Costello has sustained its popularity due to its consistency of performance and grain quality, as shown in the graphs, where

its exceptional specific weight in particular stands out with low variability. Costello provides growers with a reliable, lower risk

option with increased marketability.

Agronomics and Disease Resistance

Costello short, stiff straw and has excellent all-round disease resistance, particularly to the important diseases yellow rust (young plant and adult resistance), Septoria tritici and Fusarium. Costello is also importantly, resistant to soil borne wheat mosaic virus.

The robust disease resistance package of Costello reduces the risk for growers in high disease seasons and could help to manage costs, which is particularly important in the second wheat situation.
